Project Details (Cont.)
Your Wilton Library stands among 312 accredited libraries out of the 543 libraries in Iowa. Furthermore, Wilton is one of only
214 communities in the state with a public library web site. More than 210 children and adults participate in the Summer Library Program.
With only 2,800 square feet, however, your community has outgrown its current library space.
The 1998 space needs assessment was updated
in March 2003 and identified an increase of 301 square feet for total space of 8,901 square feet. The Quad City Times reported on
April 3, 2003 that the number of users tripled when Wheatland moved into a new library three times as large as its old facility. If
this held true in Wilton, the Library projects 7,965 registered borrowers or nearly its entire service population. Even if usage were
to double, that means 5,310 patrons.
The Wilton Library plans promote lifelong learning by creating spaces for adults, children and
students to gather, browse and read, study, and use computers. The user-friendly environment will allow food and drinks in the seating
areas. The local history and genealogy area will store information that addresses your desire to know and better understand personal
or community heritage.
The new Library offers meeting rooms that can be used by you and fellow Wilton citizens. Programming will be
offered by the Library to support a variety of lifelong learning opportunities. The Library will partner with area groups to provide
programs on antiques, investing, scouting, quilting, gardening and other special interests. The Library will also partner with the
Chamber of Commerce to provide community referral information about the businesses and agencies serving our area.
Floor space plans
also provide for:
- Private study rooms for students doing group projects
- A supervised teen area
- Increased space for patron seating
- Fifty
percent more shelf space
- Better display areas for CDs, videos, DVDs and books on tape
- Availability of new technology comparable to
that found only in metro libraries, more public use Internet-connected computers and classes on how to use them
