Questions and Answers
Wilton Library & Community Center
Where Your Community Comes to Life

Q: With the larger building, will the Library’s hours increase?

A: The Library Board continues to explore offering the most consistent open library hours. Resident satisfaction surveys will help evaluate hours and use of the building, collection, technology and programming. The Board will evaluate open hours each October so that recommendations can be included in the following budget year.

Q: How many new jobs will be created at the Wilton Library and Community Center and what will they pay?

A: We anticipate increasing staff hours by ˝ to 1 FTE, depending on whether library hours are increased.

If usage increased by the expected rates, the Library would need three people working the after school hours.  We would also like to open at 10 AM each morning to make our open hours more consistent.  Requests have also been made for extending after school hours until 4 PM.  This would add 11 open hours to the schedule bringing us to 50 hours per week.

Recommended library hours: Monday and Wednesday 10 A to 8 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 10 AM to 6 PM; Friday 10 AM to 4 PM; Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM; Sunday 2 to 5 PM.

Increased hours would increase the current budget by $15,000 to $20,000.

Most of the staffing would be covered by increasing the hours of current staff:

  • Director is aready at 40 hours.
  • Assistant Director from 20 to 30 hours.
  • Librarian from 20 to 30 hours.
  • Assistant Librarian from 15 to 20 hours.
  • Two Library Aides currently working a total of 10 hours together.  Would increase each to 10 to 15 hours.

Additional help would be hired as needed to maintain the service level during all open hours.

Anticipate sharing janitorial staff for the facility. The Library currently shares a clearing person with City Hall who works as a contract employee.

Q: What will it cost to rent the Community Room?

A: The City will establish and annually review fair and reasonable fees—not to make a profit but to cover operational costs, utilities and maintenance. The fee structure may differentiate by the size of the group, weekday or weekend usage and whether the room is rented by the hour or day.

Q: Will my taxes be raised to support this project?

A: No, the building project is being funded through private gifts and grants. Wilton property taxes will not be used for this project.

Q: Who will operate the center once it’s built?

A: The City of Wilton will own and operate the center.

Q: What will happen to the current library?

A: Plans for the prresent library space call for city use to expand office space and provide the police department with more room.
